Forever 21: Annivyrsary 2014

When I was 21, I worked at Forever 21. I was the sole stock worker on any given shift, and I ran that backroom like a movie set—there wasn’t a single maxi dress I couldn’t echolocate. Corporate shipped us way more than our Iowa store could sell, so I unpacked boxes just to pack them again, sorting as I went. I’d haul them back to an unused dressing room where they were stacked like tiny warehouses from Raiders or X-Files.

It was the first job I’d ever had where I got to wear headphones. It was see-saw monotony, endless backpedaling; a great way to listen to music all day. I probably listened to more than any other year. Mitski, Alvvays, Perfume Genius—all newcomers! Aphex Twin, D’Angelo—first album in 13 years! St. Vincent, Sun Kil Moon, Spoon, SOPHIE, Sharon Van Etten.

My first annivyrsary mixes were built in that stock room, long before Earwyrms was even a germ. When it was time for me to research this one, the work was done. I didn’t have to gather, it was just the fun part: moving it all around.

That’s why I love these issues so much. They’re a journal and a puzzle, and nothing lasts forever. When I was 22, I was fired.
