The Best Songs of 2024

The best song of 2024 isn’t on Spotify. It’s called “24/7 Heaven,” Diamond Jubilee’s closer. It comes drenched in strings and draped in blue light, at the end of Cindy Lee’s two-hour album. It’s the epitome of sublime, if you ask me—a sweet and perfect fruit, an apple at first sight.

Depending on where you stand, Diamond Jubilee is either a miracle or overhyped. At once it sounds costly as Loveless, cheap as Aeroplane. Why’s it on one part of the internet but not the other? Some people think this is crazy; they hold a grudge against it. Serving Pepsi instead of Coke! No best song if it isn’t on Spotify (neither was any other for a very long time).

But if you wash up on the shores of “24/7 Heaven,” you’ll find yourself somewhere that’s hard to explain. Is it good? The air? After all that water? Can you hear me? Buddy? You OK?
