The Songs of the Century (So Far)

ISSUE #300

We have entered the arbitrary quarter century, which is fascinating because I’ve lived through it all. Remember: 25 years into the 20th, we had The Great Gatsby and “Rhapsody in Blue.” The modernists only emerged twenty or thirty years into a horrific industrialization initiative by the wealth-seeking class—there were no mustard gases in the 1800s, and no American singles, neither.

Sometimes you watch or read things about the 1900s, and you think: “Why did they hate me so much as to destroy my world? They didn’t even know me yet.” But addiction and pleasure are the fuels of decay—and no, I am not exempt.

But one pleasure of music that separates it from others—like the sadistic pleasure of power—is that it changes, collectively, as all people do. In style and tone, time presses on.

All that is to say: the songs I picked I did not call “Best”; they were only the ones that sounded most like each accelerating year. Some are throwbacks, some push blindly forward. All are consequential, to this mind.
