The Best Songs of 2024 So Far

ISSUE #284

Technically, halfway through the year is next Monday, July 1st. This is a leap year, after all. They’re the only years where there’s an even split in days; the only times the divide falls at midnight, not noon.

But even that isn’t quite true, is it? We only need leap years because we’re imprecise. We serve two masters: civilization, and the mother Earth. One builds us order, the other knocks it down. Left to its own devices, the calendar year would spiral out of control and knock the seasons out of their allotted months. No one wants to carve pumpkins in the middle of March.

It’s in these terms that I like to think of genre and innovation. We name these sounds to describe them, but the patterns are outlined in chalk. A great song—now, that is a firehose. Some things will never fit in a neat definition: music; grace; imagination; time.

Meanwhile, Chappel Roan’s had a hell of a year. I like her. I wish I hadn’t heard last year’s album too late to include in the 2023 list. Luckily, there are other newbies just as worthy of highlighting today, while some all-time favourites are back with some really great songs.

I hope you like them. We’ll see if they last:
