Goth Almighty

ISSUE #220

Walk with me past the weathered gravestones, black with ages of grime. At the steps of a mausoleum, I grab my stick of chalk. The School of Goth is now in session.

Gothic Rock—the true Gothic Rock, separate from the fashion punchline of sitcoms—took post-punk and made it spooky and solemn. It is a genre that is almost exclusively British, brought down by Nico, Bowie, and Iggy. I’ve tried my best to map its history.

If there’s one band you remember, it’s Siouxsie and The Banshees, the first and quintessential Gothic Rock band. Siouxsie through The Cure charts the genre’s Gothfathers. For there, I lay out the Gothic Timeline, from Cocteau Twins through All About Eve. This is followed by Goth songs from non-Goth bands, from Nico through The Legendary Pink Dots. I ended the playlist with the half-Goth cuts, from Modern English through Depeche Mode.

After class, we will visit a towering black bandshell lined with billowing curtains and sitting crows. Sit and listen. The darkness is good for you.
